[Swing Club ] Last lesson of the semester tomorrow!

Hey Swing Club,

This is our LAST WEEK of lessons! Thank you all for a wonderful semester, and thank you to everyone who performed at or came to watch Salsa Showcase!

Regular Monday Lessons
Monday April 2nd in Aquatic and Fitness Center, Multi Purpose Room 1 (downstairs)
Intermediate 8:15-9:15 – Jedi Swing pt II – Apparently, a good way to work on your connection is to be blindfolded.
Beginner 9:15-10:15 – More transitions and ending songs – We’ll spend a bit more time on transitions, as well as teach you some ways to finish off songs (including a dip or two!)

Social Dance: 10:15 – 11:00 – Dance to the tunes spun by Kaitlin and Nicole!

Last Dance of the Year: this weekend!
Saturday, April 29th from 8-11 in 1515’s Studio Room, free!
Hey folks, our last dance of the year will be a small affair up in the studio of 1515. Since the space is so small, we won’t be giving a beginner lesson and will just be snacking and sending off our fourth years in swingin’ style. This is going to be a super low key dance and we would love for you to join us even if you haven’t been in a while, or haven’t done much social dancing. Can’t wait to see you all there!

End of the Year Potluck
Sunday, May 7th at 1:30 on the Lawn
This is when we get together to eat and enjoy each other’s company. It’s always a good break before finals and a good way to say good bye to the fourth years. We’ll order pizza but please sign up to bring something as well with the link below.

If you would like to come and want a ride (or are driving and can drive other people!) sign up here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a5VLF1dDedx6YIuynMykw3jNjl0lQgrfWvfnuLrIUIU/edit?usp=sharing

Video of the Week
The thing that allows partnered social dancing happen is connection. Being able to connect with a partner and communicate what you’re doing is what allows you to dance with a stranger, and at the extreme, also while blindfolded. Enjoy!

Shim Sham! This is a classic routine done to a couple different songs, and in a few different ways. The most well-known version is Frankie Manning’s, and that’s what we’ll be teaching tomorrow. Classic routines are such an awesome thing because no matter where you are traveling in the Lindy Hop world, the song will come on and everyone will start busting out these moves. Classic routines are also a great way to learn solo jazz moves, which then you can insert into your every day Lindy Hop, as we’ve been doing in intermediate. Enjoy!

Video of the Week
This is where I put videos for the sake of sharing the love of lindy hop! Comin’ at you this week is another video from Montreal. This is a routine by a bunch of dancers from both the US and Canada, and they mix a lot of different dance styles into this routine– 20’s Charleston, 30’s Charleston, solo jazz, and of course, lots of swing outs. They’re also performing to a live band which is uncommon and awesome, and the band is Gordon Webster Band, and the singer is Naomi Uyama from Naomi and her Handsome Devils. Hope you all enjoy!

Video of the Week
As you know, Youtube is a beautiful thing. There’s everything you could want to watch, including swing dancing. In this section, I’d like to include a video that could be anything from a different style of swing dance (St Louis Shag, anyone?), to a type of competition (I spend way too much time watching Jack and Jills), to something about the history of swing dance (clips of the original dancers who made this thing we do! A well known original big band leader’s music!), to a cool performance, clips from an upcoming event, to whatever dance-related thing I think would be fun or helpful to share.

This first video that I’m sharing is the Advanced Jack and Jill Finals from Montreal Swing Riot 2015, and the main reason that I’m sharing it is simply because I think this really captures the joy of the dance, and a diversity of different ways to dance Lindy Hop. It’s also a Jack and Jill, which means that competitors get randomly paired with a partner, and dance to a song chosen by the band or DJ. It’s basically just judged social dancing, and it’s super fun to watch. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlfUrVFsGI4

Swing Out,
Emily
