Do I need prior dancing experience?
Nope! Our beginner lessons are designed specifically for people without dance experience.
How much does it cost to participate in weekly lessons?
The first two lessons that YOU attend are free. It doesn’t matter which two you attend– they can be at the beginning, middle or end of the semester –they are free!! After that, we charge $15 per semester, or $25 per year. This gets you into our weekly swing and blues lessons.
Do I need a partner?
No! During a lesson, we rotate partners frequently, so you have the chance to dance with everyone!
What shoes should I wear?
Comfortable shoes that are easy to move in. Follows (traditionally girls): shoes with low traction are easier to spin in. Flip-flops, stilettos, boots, etc, are not recommended. Converse, Keds, Toms, ballerina flats, etc, are popular choices for beginner follows, but sneakers also work. Leads (traditionally guys): sneakers, for beginner leads are fine.
A cheap way for follows and leads to reduce traction on shoes is to put duct-tape on the bottom of shoes.
Dancers interested in purchasing shoes designed for swing dance often order them online from www.dancestore.com Both leads and follows typically wear sueded or leather soled shoes, making it easier to spin and turn. Character shoes are also a popular choice. A local dance store carries them www.thehipjointdances.com
What clothes should I wear?
Lessons are casual. Wearing jeans and a t-shirt is perfectly fine! Follows often spin, so if one is wearing a dress or skirt, we recommend wearing leggings, athletic shorts, etc. underneath. Both leads and follows should wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in and doesn’t easily slip off of one’s shoulders (for example, tube tops are not recommended).
Our dances are often themed, so we usually have costume contests. Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter what you wear. People love an excuse to dress up though, so don’t be surprised if people are dressed in semi-formal attire. Our annual spring semi-formal is the only dance that we encourage people to dress nicely for.
I have some prior dance experience, should I come to the beginner or intermediate lessons?
It depends on what sort of dance experience you have. Our intermediate lessons are designed for dancers with experience in Lindy Hop, Charleston and East Coast. One is encouraged to come to both lessons to see which level they feel more comfortable in. Some dancers attend both lessons, or mix and match depending on what they feel comfortable with.
